Out with the ordinary, in with the STEAM! Girls Explore Summer Camp is in its fourth summer, and our robust programs are ready to involve girls in safe and fun activities that will encourage them to be silly, play, and learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.
Why is Girls Explore the right place for your 4th-7th Grade girl? Read on!
1. Incorporating ART.
Along with the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, teaching Art is key to creativity. Creativity is an essential component to innovation, being innovate will help kids develop their critical thinking skills they need to come up with new inventions and ways of thinking out of the box.
2. Learning to FAIL and REBUILD.
By taking an active part in rec and educational activities, the participants take risks and may fail but they are built back up and encouraged by other participants and adult leaders to continue until they master the activities. We are teaching girls that interest gets you in the game, but to persist keeps you there.
3. Squashing ASSUMPTIONS, building CONFIDENCE.
During camp, girls learn science is not ‘out there’ or ‘unattainable’. The overall goal of the camp is to build self-esteem and confidence over the summer by encouraging the girls to take part in recreational and educational activities, and building relationships with peers.
4. Getting OUT OF THE BOX.
Researchers have found that bringing science to girls outside the classroom can help encourage curiosity and skill development. Whether in the garden, in the lab, or behind the scenes at the zoo, girls will have the opportunity to go beyond the ordinary to spark their discoveries.
5. It’s a NATIONAL MOVEMENT.
At Douglass, we are joining the national STEAM efforts by providing girls, especially minorities, with hands-on science exploration and visiting with real world role models and facilities. We focus on girls between 4th- 7th grades because early exposure is critical to developing cognitive skills and an interest in science, and because women and minorities are traditionally under-represented in STEAM fields.
