Champaign Public Library and Champaign Park District invite the public to the annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 13, from 12–3pm, at the Douglass Park campus. Attendees can expect live music and dancing, food trucks, pick-up basketball games, a scavenger hunt, giant yard games, giveaways, Douglass Branch Library Makerspace demos, and more. Dozens of community vendors and nonprofit resources will also be available throughout the event.
“We are thrilled to celebrate Juneteenth at Douglass Park once again this summer,” said Sarah Sandquist, Champaign Park District Executive Director. “This tradition has become an important community event, and we are honored to work with the Champaign Public Library to bring it to life each year.”
Douglass Branch Manager Thea Green echoed the sentiment, sharing, “We look forward to partnering with the Champaign Park District each year for Juneteenth, a celebration that brings community members of all ages and backgrounds together to connect, celebrate, and learn.”
In addition to the Juneteenth Celebration, Champaign Park District will host a free Juneteenth Concert on Friday, June 19, at 6pm, also at Douglass Park.
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the abolition of slavery in the United States. The Juneteenth Celebration in Douglass Park is presented by Champaign Public Library in partnership with Champaign Park District.
