This month, we are embracing Black History Month and taking the opportunity to celebrate the influence the Black community provides to Champaign.
Frederick Douglass tribute
We are so proud of Douglass Park’s history and how it has grown into the space it is today. Since the 1930s, the park space has served the African American community of Champaign, and the community continues to serve as a meeting place for activities and gatherings. Read about Frederick Douglass and his influence on our park name. In most recent news, Douglass Community Center’s First String Program was highlighted on “Angels Among Us” featuring Peter McFarland. It shows the program and Center as a way for families to gather and be a part of each others’ lives.
Douglass L.E.A.D. and Leonhard Afterschool
Afterschool kids are engaging in Black History month. Crafts this month incorporate impassioned speeches by Martin Luther King, and how to relate those ideas to current times. Kids are learning about black role models; instructors are engaging in games to help kids recognize key historical figures and watching short clips about their impact. Participants will also create a Freedom Quilt craft to experience unity.
Ages 50+ Soul Food Potluck
Getting connected to roots and culture often happens through food and friends. To celebrate Black History Month, seniors and friends are enjoying traditional soul food during this potluck. Bring a special dish to share and sample a variety of foods in celebration.

Throughout the year, we continue to celebrate Black History, namely through our Juneteenth celebration, and CU Days. While we take this month to focus on the celebration, we are committed to servicing and celebrating the positive impact of our Black community.
