Champaign County Design and Conservation (CCDC) Foundation and Champaign Park District have announced a special Arbor Day tree planting on Friday, April 24, at Kaufman Lake. 30 trees will be planted along the Greenbelt Bikeway Trail as the first installation of CCDC Foundation’s Gratitude Grove initiative. Community members are invited to attend the tree planting, which will begin with opening remarks at 8am.
“Our first board president, Susan Stone, was on site at the dedication of this bikeway, so it is wonderful that we are able to present this tribute to her work and all the board members who followed at the same location,” said the CCDC Foundation Board.
“Champaign Park District has been dedicated to improving the Greenbelt Bikeway Trail, most recently by updating parts of the pathway and retaining walls under I72,” said Sarah Sandquist, Champaign Park District Executive Director. “We are grateful to continue these improvements through this partnership with CCDC Foundation.”
The new trees will increase the trail’s natural shade, as well as provide shelter from wind and rain, enhancing the experience of trail users.
