The Champaign Park District has been made aware of a gun violence incident that happened at a late-night gathering near Douglass Park early Sunday morning. The Park District extends its sympathies to all the families affected by this unfortunate incident.
“Our concerns and condolences are with the friends and families affected by the violence that occurred this past Sunday,” said Sarah Sandquist, Champaign Park District Executive Director. “The Champaign Park District is committed to creating a healthy environment and bringing positive programming and events to Douglass Park in order to strengthen our community.”
The Park District encourages anyone that becomes aware of late-night gatherings at any Champaign park to please contact the Champaign Police Department: 217-333-8911.
Community members may also get involved and help support solutions by participating at an upcoming Community Gun Violence Reduction Blueprint Response Meeting at Douglass Annex (804 N. Fifth St.) on Thursday, June 15 from 6-7:30pm. That meeting is sponsored by the City of Champaign Equity and Engagement Department’s Community Safety and Justice Division.
