After starting a playground redesign project at Garden Hills Park in the spring, Champaign Park District has officially completed the upgraded playground and is excited to invite neighbors to a ribbon cutting on Thursday, August 13, from 6-7pm to commemorate the occasion.
The new playground at Garden Hills Park prioritizes accessibility and modernized equipment. The Park District also fixed flood damage during the project, aligning with the City of Champaign’s Garden Hill drainage developments.
Residents of the Garden Hills subdivision were invited to collaborate on the redesign by choosing a color scheme and offering feedback on the selected Nutoys Leisure Products equipment during a public meeting on March 5, 2026. A color scheme poll was also shared on the Park District’s Facebook page to garner additional feedback. The public ultimately chose a turquoise and yellow color palette.
“For almost 70 years, Garden Hills residents have enjoyed leisure activities at Garden Hills Park,” said Sarah Sandquist, Champaign Park District Executive Director. “We are thrilled that we get to continue this tradition and look forward to connecting with neighbors at the ribbon cutting.”
In addition to the new playground, Garden Hills Park recently received a new sidewalk paint job along the United Way Born Learning Trail, an outdoor, play-based educational activity for families with toddlers and preschool-aged children.
