In recent weeks, Champaign Park District staff have identified a significant amount of damage to multiple trees around the city including Centennial Park and Douglass Park. This damage appears to be human-made and could result in the death of several trees that provide shade to our park-users and environmental benefits to our community.
The Champaign Park District has reported these incidents to the Champaign Police Department for investigation and is actively tracking tree health. Similar intentional damage was identified last August in West Side Park.
The appraised value of these damaged trees, based on their age and condition, is more than $3,000 along with an environmental impact due to the loss of multiple mature trees. As a reminder to park-users, if you see any suspicious activity in our parks, please do not hesitate to contact police at 217-333-8911.
We encourage all to be stewards of our green spaces. Please help us protect them for future generations!
