Champaign-Urbana (CU) Special Recreation invites community members to race in the upcoming Cupcake 5K, which will be held at Carle at the Fields on Sunday, November 1. This timed, certified race ends with a delicious cupcake and welcomes runners, walkers, wheelchair users, strollers, and more. All ages can participate in the 5K as well. A 100-meter dash for youth 16 and under will take place directly after the race.
Registration fees will benefit the CU Special Recreation Scholarship Program, which supports individuals in need of financial assistance to access CU Special Recreation’s programs and services.
“For 14 years, the Cupcake 5K has been a fun way for the community to help support what we do here at CU Special Recreation,” said Christina Mott, CUSR Program Manager. “Those who join us to race directly impact recreation access for people of diverse abilities.”
Following the race, participants are welcome to attend a special after party at The Landing (4503 Legends Dr). Admission is free, and food and drinks will be provided.
Individuals interested in participating may register online at cuspecialrecreation.com or register on-site on November 1 from 8-8:45am. Registration fees are $45 for the 5K and $25 for the 100-meter dash. All registrants will receive an exclusive race medal. Race T-shirts are guaranteed for participants who register on or before October 23. Non-racers can also purchase T-shirts for $20 at: Cupcake 5K Store
About the CU Special Recreation Scholarship Program
For individuals with disabilities, medical and therapy expenses often take precedence, leaving little room in the budget for recreational opportunities such as social activities, team sports, or travel. The CUSR Scholarship Program helps bridge this gap by providing financial assistance to Champaign-Urbana in-district residents with disabilities, enabling them to participate in programming at half the standard cost.
