Each year, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) celebrates Older Americans Month (OAM) to highlight a nationwide movement that prioritizes senior services. This year, the theme of OAM is Flip the Script on Aging, which strives to change the conversations and perceptions of aging in the US.
Champaign Park District is excited to join the OAM fun this year with weekly programs for our Active Senior program participants to enjoy. We are honored to highlight the importance of senior recreation this May and throughout the year.
Benefits of Senior Recreation
Did you know that participating in recreational activities as you age can improve your overall health and well-being? According to the National Recreation and Park Association’s “Supporting Older Adults Through Parks and Recreation” report, 74% of parks and recreation organizations are among the most prominent providers of services and programming for seniors in their communities. Of these programs, 95% report that they specifically target social support and work to eliminate social isolation among older adults.
In addition to social support, senior recreation also provides opportunities for physical activity, engages older adults with their community, and helps them find resources for healthcare, meals, and more. For many, these supports are vital for leading a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life.
These benefits contribute significantly to the OAM theme of Flip the Script on Aging. With the recreational opportunities we offer year-round, Champaign Park District strives to promote health and well-being among Champaign’s senior population.
