As the warmer months beckon, Champaign Park District is proud to announce a series of enhancements set to elevate the park experience for residents and visitors alike. With a focus on accessibility, aesthetics, and community engagement, these projects promise to enhance the beauty and functionality of our beloved green spaces.
West Side Park Sidewalk Improvements: Commencing later this month, West Side Park will undergo a significant upgrade to its sidewalk infrastructure. Aimed at enhancing accessibility for all park-goers, the project will introduce strategically placed passing nodes along the expansive path system. Scheduled for completion by the end of June, this initiative will also involve the replacement of select sidewalk panels, necessitating temporary closures within the park. During construction, access to the playground will be redirected to the south gate, ensuring minimal disruption to recreational activities. While West Side Park remains open throughout the improvement process, patrons are urged to exercise caution and patience during their visits.
Robeson Trail Restoration: Simultaneously, Robeson Trail will witness revitalization efforts with the replacement of several sidewalk panels. Although portions of the trail may experience temporary closures during this period, the project is slated for completion by early May, ensuring minimal inconvenience to trail enthusiasts.
Henry Michael Park Shelter: Champaign Park District will commence construction of a brand-new shelter at Henry Michael Park this May. Scheduled for completion by the end of summer, this highly-requested addition will be rentable for activities and events, enhancing the park’s appeal as a community hub.
Kaufman Park Access: The Illinois Dept. of Transportation has begun the preliminary work on the IL Route 10 (West Springfield Ave.) bridge over the Copper Slough. In about three weeks, both lanes of Route 10 will be closed at the construction area until October of this year. Kaufman Park and Kaufman Lake will remain open during construction with the following changes.
Access to Kaufman Lake (by vehicle) will be available on Route 10 (Springfield Ave.) via a temporary driveway slightly west of the original entrance. Walk and bike-in route will be from the east and crossing the bridge in Kaufman Park.
