Does your young scientist want to dive into the world of 3D printing but doesn’t know where to start? Check out Champaign Park District’s winter 3D Printing Labs – a series of sessions all about how to use 3D printing to solve real-world problems. These activities are perfect for preteens aged 11-14 who are interested in gaining hands-on experience using 3D printers and design programs.
This year, we are offering 3D Printing Labs*, all for free! Spots are limited, so browse the labs below, and register for the session that works best for your preteen’s schedule.
*Each week will feature the same content, so attending multiple weeks is not required.

What to Expect
Get hands-on with technology, science, and engineering in this immersive 3D Camp experience. Participants will explore how 3D printers work and use beginner-friendly computer-aided design (CAD) software to create custom objects and functional prototypes.
Over the course of the week, campers work in small teams to design, build, and test a 3D-printed water filtration system. Students experiment with different filtration materials, collect real data on water clarity and flow rate, and use their results to improve their designs through iteration—just like real engineers.
In addition to technical skills, campers develop critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills as they analyze results and present their final designs. This camp emphasizes creativity, problem-solving, and learning through trial and improvement.
Important: Water filtration activities are for educational purposes only. Filtered water is not safe for drinking.
