While we are devastated by the recent news of Newt Dodds’s passing, we are honored to celebrate his significant legacy in Champaign Park District.
Newt served as a Park Board Commissioner for nearly 40 years, from 1975 to 2013, and as president from 1981 onward. He collaborated closely with Bob Toalson to develop many cherished community parks, including Dodds Park in West Champaign. Dodds Park was named in honor of his father, D.C. Dodds, also a 40-year commissioner.
In addition to his service to the Park Board, Newt generously supported several Park District projects, including the Virginia Theatre restoration, the Lindsay New American Gardens and Tennis Center, Clark Park, Champaign Parks Foundation fundraisers, and so much more.
Newt helped shape the recreational landscape of Champaign that we all know and love today. We are so thankful for his contributions. His impact will be felt for generations to come.
