Each year, Boneyard Creek Community Day engages Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy residents in the awareness and responsibility of naturalizing and sustaining our urban waterways through organized litter clean-up, education, and removal of invasive species to restore natural habitat and showcase the amenity value of a healthy ecosystem.
Individuals, families, and community groups can join the effort on April 12 to clean up litter from sites all over our community, including Scott Park, Kaufman Lake, and Heritage Park. The Boneyard Creek Community Day event is possible because of many community volunteers and supporting agencies. Work sites vary from those suitable for younger children to more challenging sites.
Litter takes away from the beauty of our ecosystems, leads to pollution, and attracts more litter over time. It also clogs storm drains, causing local flooding, and ends up in receiving streams, harming aquatic life. Through collective clean-up efforts, Boneyard Creek Community Day reminds us to be stewards of our environment.
Interested parties can register onsite on April 12. Clean-up will begin at 9am. Volunteers will enjoy a free lunch at Scott Park following the clean-up.
Boneyard Creek Community Day is a collaborative partnership among the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Facilities & Services, City of Champaign, Keep Champaign Beautiful, Champaign Park District, City of Urbana, Urbana Park District, Prairie Rivers Network, Village of Savoy, Champaign County Soil & Water Conservation District, Champaign County Design & Conservation Foundation, Farnsworth Group, and Champaign County Forest Preserve.
