When I say summer, what do you think of? Perhaps traveling, family time, going to the beach, or even simply “hot.” While all of that is true, and so fun, we tend to forget all about the local activities that are happening near us.
Park districts have this interesting stereotype of only being catered for the kids in the community. While there are many events and activities going on for them, there is also lots to do if you’re a busy adult who’s in need of some fun this summer.
If you happen to be in the Chambana area this summer, trying to make this your most memorable one yet, look no further. From date night to family time, here are the top 5 events you don’t want to miss!
- Edison Hessel Concert

The Champaign Park District partners with the Edison Middle School band and hosts a free, family-friendly concert every first Saturday, running from May through August. This is a great opportunity to bring your loved ones and enjoy great music outdoors. Bringing your own lawn chairs and refreshments is encouraged.

Continuing the music trend, every fourth Thursday through May and August, experience an evening filled with live music, good eats, and great company. Get comfy and spread out a blanket or lawn chair to listen to local musicians. After you’ve built up your appetite, food trucks are scattered around with a variety of options available to purchase in case you didn’t pack your own picnic basket (which is totally acceptable to bring).

Celebrating the end of slavery in the U.S. is a no-brainer, especially within the Champaign community that fosters an inclusive environment. This celebration honors and recognizes the African American culture and resilience through a variety of music, vendors, activities, and games for everyone to enjoy. This is a great way to spread awareness about the history, all while engaging in the heritage.

The iconic Champaign-Urbana days (definitely mark your calendars for this one)! Celebrate this long-standing tradition that brings both community and culture together. Kids can enjoy face painting, balloon animals, and so many more fun activities. Come out to this three-day event featuring live music and local cuisine, on top of a marketplace full of merchandise vendors and nonprofit organizations. There is something for everyone here at CU!
Please note: No pets allowed, except for service animals.
5. Lakeside Brews, Beats & Eats

This is a perfect option for those who want some time for themselves, away from the kids and/or home responsibilities. Bring all of your friends for a night to remember!
